3 Ways HRs can use Pokémon Go to build a happy workplace

With over 75M downloads worldwide in a week (without official launch at many places), Pokémon Go is the new found love of mobile gamers. Interestingly, a majority of Pokémon Go addicts are aged 25+ and it is getting difficult to keep them away from this virtual reality game even at work!  Should you let your employees play on?

A recent poll by Forbes mentions that almost 69% of the users, play the game at work. While some may see the game as a distraction hampering productivity, it is also turning out to be a great ice breaker. So if the Pokémon Go fever has engulfed your workplace, here are three things that the HRs can do to be a game changer (quite literally!)

  • Bonding vs. Distraction: The game is addictive and staying away from it for a long time is tough. However, you can leverage this addiction as a great team building exercise. Co-workers are already teaming up to find their favorite Pokémon’s. So why not let them congregate? How about giving them 10 mins of play time on a Monday (remember painting Mondays red?) or on any day and see them bond with professional rivals over a Pokémon?
  • Fit and fine: Almost 80% of the participants in the Forbes survey said that they were exercising a lot more due to the game. The game requires the players to keep walking around their place in search of the Pokémon’s. Exercising is a proven way to keep fit and enhance focus and productivity. Many be a quick 10-minute walk around post lunch with the game can be a quick way to freshen up for your employees.
  • Motivation Booster:  How about throwing in some incentives for the players who perform well at work and also find their Pokémon’s? Make it into an internal competition of sorts and tie it up with work targets to see the difference. Given the craze and the addiction that players have, they would totally love adding a pinch of Pokémon to their daily work!

Too much of everything is bad and when it comes to workplaces, there needs to be a decorum for sure. However, given the tech savvy workforce that we have now, it is a good idea to try new ways to keep them engaged and motivated. Adding a bit of fun to the daily work (of course under supervision) can do wonders to the productivity and engagement of your team. So play on, and bring the change!
